Elderly Caregiver (Non-Medical)

Non-medical support for older parents: help with bathing, meals and walking, medicine reminders and someone to talk to. Not a nurse or medical professional.

This need often creeps up slowly. A retired father or mother starts going out less, forgets their medicine, or nearly slips in the bathroom. Their children work, live in another city, or have busy families of their own. An elderly caregiver helps your parent keep living in their own home, with someone beside them every day.

One thing should be clear from the start. Our caregivers are non-medical. They are not nurses or healthcare workers.

Everyday help

  • Bathing, dressing, eating and personal hygiene
  • Steadying walks and bed-to-chair moves to prevent falls
  • Reminders to take medicine on time
  • Meals for a set diet, such as low-salt or low-sugar
  • Conversation, the newspaper, favorite shows or prayer time
  • Going along to checkups with family or the driver
  • Flagging changes, like a poor appetite or more confusion

Medicine reminders follow the prescription and whatever notes the family or doctor has left.

What a caregiver doesn't do

Caregivers don't give injections, insert or remove IV lines or catheters, treat wounds that need nursing skills, or change medication doses. If your parent has just come home from surgery, uses medical equipment or needs clinical monitoring, bring in a licensed nurse or health professional. The caregiver can still handle daily needs alongside that medical care.

Before the caregiver arrives

Talk to your parent first. Many older people feel uncomfortable being looked after by someone outside the family (Indonesians call this feeling "sungkan"), so involve them in the candidate interviews. Prepare a list of medications and checkup dates, phone numbers for the doctor and for family members, and the small habits that matter to your parent, like when they nap or which foods they won't eat.

Questions from families

Can a caregiver look after a parent who is bedridden?
For daily help such as washing them, turning them in bed and feeding them, yes, following guidance from the family and healthcare professionals. If the condition calls for medical procedures, a nurse is still needed.

I live in another city. Can I interview remotely?
Yes, by video call. It's even better if a relative who lives near your parent can meet the candidate too.

We interview caregiver candidates, check their ID documents and screen them for the role, but the final decision stays with you and your parent. Placement fees, the replacement guarantee and salaries are covered in the FAQ. Tell us about your parent's situation so we can find a good match.
