Housekeeper with Childcare

One person for the housework who also keeps an eye on your child. Works best once your little one is fairly independent and the duties are agreed up front.

Not every family needs two people in the house. If your child can play alone for a little while, eats regular family meals and naps on a steady schedule, one housekeeper who can also mind the kids ("momong" in Indonesian) is often enough. She cleans, cooks and does the laundry while still keeping watch over your little one.

Splitting time between the house and the child

It comes down to priorities. Your child's safety always comes first, so she won't leave them alone to hang laundry upstairs or pop out to the corner shop. Everything else can be planned together. Mopping and cooking can happen during nap time, for example, and ironing gets done while your child plays in the same room.

Duties usually agreed on:

  • Cleaning, laundry, ironing and simple cooking
  • Bath time, meals and naps for your child
  • Milk and snacks prepared the way you want
  • Keeping toys, bottles and your child's clothes clean
  • Telling you if your child falls, gets a fever or won't eat

When this isn't the right choice

For a baby under one, a child with special needs, or a large house with a lot of work, one person will be stretched too thin. In those cases a newborn baby sitter or a nanny who focuses on the child, plus a housekeeper for the house, is usually the safer setup.

Salary

Because she's doing two jobs, the pay is higher than for a regular housekeeper. As a guide, live-in housekeepers in Greater Jakarta (Jabodetabek) usually earn Rp2.5–3.5 million a month, and around Rp3–4 million when childcare is part of the job. You agree the final amount directly with her.

Common questions

What if a second baby comes along?
The workload goes up quite a bit. Revisit her duties and salary, or think about adding a sitter just for the baby.

Can she take my child to school too?
Yes, if the school is close by and you've agreed on it. Decide who keeps an eye on the house while she's out.
