Newborn Baby Sitter (0–12 Months)

A baby sitter just for infants up to 12 months. She handles baths, warms expressed milk or mixes formula, protects nap times and takes night shifts so you can rest.

Baby sitter holding a sleeping newborn

The first weeks with a newborn are rarely orderly. Your baby wakes every two or three hours, swaddles and tiny onesies pile up in the laundry, and Mom is still recovering from the birth. A newborn baby sitter, whom many Indonesian families call a "suster", helps you get through this stretch.

In this context "suster" means a baby carer, not a nurse. Our baby sitters don't carry out any medical procedures.

What a newborn baby sitter does

  • Baths and diapers, done the way your pediatrician advises
  • Warming frozen breast milk or mixing formula
  • Sterilizing bottles and breast pump parts
  • Night shifts, split the way you agree, so Mom sleeps longer
  • Burping after feeds and settling a fussy baby
  • Keeping the baby in a safe sleeping position
  • Separate washing and ironing for baby clothes and swaddles
  • A log of feeds, sleep and diaper changes, if you want one
  • From around six months, making first solids from your menu

When to start looking

Most families start looking shortly before the due date, especially with a first baby or when neither set of grandparents can come and stay. Some mothers come to us near the end of maternity leave because they want the baby settled with a sitter before they go back to the office. We suggest starting your search about a month before the date you need someone.

What to prepare at home

  • A room, or at least a bed, if she'll be living in with you (live-in)
  • Clear rules, for example who holds the baby at night and whether the baby can be taken out of the house
  • Phone numbers for your pediatrician or midwife
  • Set rest hours and days off, because caring for a newborn is exhausting work

Questions we often get

Can the baby sitter give medicine?
Only with written instructions from you or your doctor. She won't decide on medication herself, and if the baby has a fever or seems off, she'll let you know right away.

Do we need a new sitter once the baby turns one?
Not necessarily. If it's working well for everyone, she can stay on, and her role shifts toward baby sitting for 13 to 24 month olds.

Every candidate we put forward has been interviewed, had her ID documents checked and been tested for the role. The steps are explained on our About page. Placement fees, the replacement guarantee and typical salaries are covered in the FAQ. When you're ready, tell us what you need.
